What Florida Law Actually Requires

Florida sets tint limits by VLT, or visible light transmission, which is the percentage of light the glass and film let through together. A lower number means a darker window. The rules are written in Florida Statutes 316.2953 through 316.2956, and they treat passenger cars a little differently than SUVs and vans.


For a standard passenger car in Florida, the legal limits are:


  • Windshield: non-reflective tint is allowed above the AS-1 line only, or above the top five inches if no AS-1 line is marked
  • Front side windows: must allow more than 28% of light in
  • Back side windows: must allow more than 15% of light in
  • Rear window: must allow more than 15% of light in


SUVs, Vans and Multipurpose Vehicles

Florida gives multipurpose vehicles more room in the back. The front side windows still have to let in more than 28% of light, but the back side windows and rear window only need to let in more than 6%. That is why the SUV parked next to you at the Pembroke Pines Publix can look considerably darker in the rear than a sedan and still be perfectly legal.



If your rear window is tinted at all, Florida requires dual side mirrors so you keep a usable view behind you.

The process of installing commercial window tints is fairly straightforward. First, the area to be tinted must be cleaned and dry. Next, a adhesive film is applied to the glass. The film is then cut to size and applied to the window. Once the film is in place, a squeegee is used to remove any air bubbles and ensure that the film is properly adhered to the glass. Finally, the excess film is trimmed away and the window is left to cure. The entire process can usually be completed in a matter of hours, and the results are both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional. In addition to reducing glare and UV rays, commercial window tints can also help to improve privacy and security.

Reflectivity Limits People Forget

Darkness is only half the law. Florida also caps how mirrored a film can be, because reflective glare bounced into another driver's eyes is a real hazard on I-95 at sunrise. Front side windows cannot be more than 25% reflective, and back side windows cannot be more than 35% reflective.



Metallic and mirror-look films are the ones that get flagged here. The films we install are non-reflective, which keeps you clear of the reflectivity rule while still cutting heat.

Medical Exemptions

Florida does allow darker tint than the standard limits if you have a medical need, such as lupus, photosensitivity, or another condition a doctor documents. The exemption is not automatic and it is not something a tint shop can issue. You apply through the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles with a certificate signed by a licensed physician, optometrist, or ophthalmologist, and you keep the approved paperwork in the vehicle.
